If no one bothered Kenshin, Kenshin would be perfectly happy never fighting anyone. I have to respect that, as much as the teacher in the anime (I don't think he was in the manga) who Sano made promise to "never hold a sword again." People deserve to live the lives they choose. He was a stone-cold manslayer, and he's made a promise to himself not to do it again. His policy is based on the fact that he's been there/done that, unlike Batman. So in a sense, Batman's no-kill policy is dumb and causes more harm than good.īut I feel differently about Kenshin. Yeah, I hear you guys on the Batman thing - if only Batman had just killed Joker (or -insert other recurring villain here-) he would have saved thousands of lives. The two-character formed name KenShin is formed from the character “Sword” and “Heart”, and as he says in the ending, “To put my sword and my heart on the line, and complete this fighting life to the very end.” This ultimately lead to one of his most signature lines in the entire manga: Then lastly through Enishi's inquistion, Kenshin was ultimately able to understand that even though the sins he did may never be forgiven and there's no making up for his mistakes, dying is only a convenient excuse and self satisfaction to run away from one's responsibilities, he had wrongdoings he must atone for and people that depended on him, so he can't give up on his own life. But he had taken his own life lightly, not realizing that he too is a person, with those that cared about him, his life isn't just his own, and only through living he can truly make those around him happy, learning what is true strength (the will to live) and subsequently the amakakeru ryu no hirameki. His guilt and outtake of life led him to a wandering life trying to make up for those that suffered from the war. Kenshin, who has taken lives of many others out of righteousness and subconscious taken life lightly, finally realized that everyone's had their own lives including his enemies after Tomoe's death. This is the central theme of the entire series, atonement. It is what I like the most about this manga, it is Kenshin's way to atone for his sins, to protect everyone he sees from dying to the best of his abilities.
